In ancient times, places along the Sea of Japan coast with terrain suitable for good harbors must have prospered through exchanges with the continent. The Tango region also had good harbors, flourished greatly, and had powerful clans. Evidence of that history is displayed here. Its relationship with the Yamato government is interesting. What I feel at local history museums is that the staff seem relatively reluctant to guide visitors through the exhibits. Nevertheless, I received an excellent archaeological site handbook. Places that welcome you really warmly have active volunteer programs, and local government support is essential for that. Visitors also have different levels of knowledge, so responding to them is probably difficult. Rather than just looking and leaving, if explanations and answers to questions were provided, the long journey wouldn't feel like a burden…

A history museum surveying Tango's history and folk customs since ancient times, standing on a small hill overlooking Amanohashidate where Tango Province's provincial temple once stood. The excavated objects from the Jomon, Yayoi, and Kofun periods in the permanent exhibition are certainly impressive, and they clearly convey the ancient prosperity of this region, where the “丹後王国” is said to have existed. On the other hand, the displays covering history after ancient times seem weak. Furthermore, about 1/3 of the exhibits were devoted to folkloric explanations of fishing, agriculture, festivals, and so on, making the coverage of modern and later periods even thinner. Of course, this is because the museum's exhibition space is far too small. Apparently there are plans to rebuild the museum and expand the displays, so I have hopes for its future.

Exhibits that convey Tango's history. The special exhibition “桂昌院と宮津藩主本庄松平家” was carefully presented. Character panels were installed. It was a special exhibition that both adults and children could enjoy. Admission was 250 yen for the special exhibition, free for those aged 65 and over. It also includes admission to the neighboring 永島家住宅.
