It is said that long ago, Izumi Shikibu composed a poem about it, 'If the Iso Shimizu under the pines of Hashidate were in the capital, I would draw it for you,' and it is also mentioned in haiku such as 'One sip is truly worth a thousand gold pieces of Iso Shimizu,' making it clear that it has long been cherished by those who visit Hashidate. In the sixth year of Enpo (1678), Nagai Naonaga, the lord of Miyazu Castle at the time, had the 'Ban Shimizu Ki' engraved and erected here after obtaining a text written by the Kobuin scholar Hayashi Shun. This inscription states, 'There is a well of spring water on the shore of Amanohashidate in Tango Province, and it is a separate source of water in the middle of the sea...'. The gushing spring water continues to flow to this day, is loved by many people who visit Hashidate, and was certified as one of the '100 Best Waters' by the Environment Agency in 1985.
