にょろ助Negiya Nyorosuke Pontocho
Classic dishes featuring grilled eel offered in a nostalgic space with counter, booth & floor seats.
An eel shop that serves "Jiyaki" (grilled directly) without steaming. With the principle of buying live eels, splitting them fresh, and grilling them fresh, enjoy Kabayaki with crispy and fragrant skin, and meat where you can feel the original deliciousness, fat content, and texture of the eel. Our pride is the luxurious eel box with one piece of Shirayaki and one piece of Kabayaki, called "Gokujo". We also cater for takeout. While waiting for the grilling time, enjoy eel delicacies such as skewers and boiled liver.

This establishment is a true treasure, awaiting discovery! We thoroughly enjoyed the eel over rice, which was freshly prepared to order using the finest ingredients and expertly cooked by the master chef. The service was exceptional, the sake and beer were delightful, and the ambiance provides a wonderfully serene setting for a peaceful meal, especially as the bustling energy of Pontocho alley subsides outside. We wholeheartedly recommend a visit to this place to experience their exquisite Eel over rice.
View on GoogleA great place to enjoy Kansai-style grilled eel (kabayaki). The side dishes, including the crispy deep-fried eel bones, grilled eel liver, and Japanese rolled omelet with grilled eel, were all delicious and paired perfectly with a drink. If you’re looking to try authentic Kansai-style eel in Kyoto without breaking the bank, this is a place I’d definitely recommend.
View on GoogleSuch a hidden gem for unagi. Tucked just behind Kiyamachi-dori Street, this place serves awesome, flavor-packed eel dishes in either individual portions or large clay pots to share. The space isn’t very big, but each booth can accommodate up to six people comfortably. The chefs and servers were very friendly and interactive, even giving us the chance to take videos of the eel being placed on the grill. Overall, I would definitely come back. The prices are a bit on the higher side, you can find cheaper options elsewhere, but for the experience and quality, I’d say it’s absolutely worth it.
View on GoogleThe reviews undersell the quality of the food. The unagi donabe is one of the top ten meals I ever had in Japan. The main issue is how popular this place is with tourists. The staff is eternally patient and generous with their attention and focus. Well done team. That miso kosho thing is evil, please send me a box of it.
View on GoogleAbsolutely delicious charcoal unagi in clay pot rice and great atmosphere. Note the unagi in clay pot rice is minimum 2 people, for us was perfect amount of food. Prices were fair and it was super cozy, clean and welcoming. Also great sake and drink selection. We will highly recommend to friends visiting Kyoto.
