Official information from Kyoto City Hall and other sources states that the museum is open only on Mondays, Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays. To check in person, I visited on a Monday in October 2024 and found a “Open today” sign hanging at the entrance. In October 2024, I submitted a correction to the incorrect Google Maps listing with photos attached, but it was rejected. Be aware that, following a submission by an anonymous user in early January 2025, Monday opening is still omitted at present. 【Added January 2025】 Admission is free, and there are toilets inside the building. The museum reopened following reorganization in October 2022 (Reiwa 4), repurposing the former 京北第二小学校 building along National Route 477. Beside the building is a playground with sports equipment remaining from its elementary school days. There is an open area between the gate and the building where cars and other vehicles can park for free. The reception desk is on the right side of the entrance hall. Tell the caretaker you are visiting, and you will be lent an admission pass to wear around your neck. When leaving, simply drop it into the wooden box in front of reception. You can also request an explanatory guide. The permanent and special exhibitions are at the back of the former school building; let the guide take you there and explain them. The permanent exhibition covers the 京北 area from the Jomon period to the Edo period, while the special exhibition, “源氏物語 祈の抄,” focuses mainly on the Heian period. They display artifacts and other items excavated from these periods. Next to the permanent exhibition area, shelves hold excavation materials from across Japan, along with manga, picture books, and illustrated reference books on history and culture, all freely available to browse. The final part of the exhibition introduces the activities of 維新勤王山国隊 during the late shogunate and Restoration period, together with artifacts. After viewing the exhibitions, I recommend visiting the nearby 山國神社 and 山国護国神社 to pay your respects. 【Written October 2024】
View on GoogleI think visitor numbers could be increased further by expanding the exhibits and promoting the museum. Exchanging information, collaborating on sponsorship, and so on with museums in the 丹後 region might also be interesting.
View on GoogleOpen Saturdays, Sundays, Mondays + public holidays. A repurposed elementary school building. It has quite a good collection of excavated finds for a rural exhibition facility. Excavation reports from various places are casually arranged, but there is also a coin-operated copier, and apparently you are allowed to make copies.
View on GoogleThere are displays of excavated finds and the history of 山国, as well as gold-leaf roof tiles from 伏見城. It was a small place, but I recommend it to anyone interested.
