Spicy Kumano Jinja-mae is a Kyoto curry restaurant just steps from Kumano Shrine. Founded in 1950 as a Western-style restaurant in Shijo Kawaramachi, we have evolved into one of Kyoto's destinations for authentic spice curry.

Really lovely curry. I got the vegetable one and added a potato cutlet and my partner got the beef curry. Can customize spice and size and toppings, we got spicy and extra spicy but probably could have gone spicier! Excellent service with very good English and English menus too. Lovely staff and very quick service.

Lovely curry place, best curry we had on our trip! The staff were very friendly and speaking English wasn’t a problem. They had a whole menu in English including photos which made ordering and choosing the meals incredibly easy. The food arrived very quickly and was absolutely delicious. My partner recommends the beef curry (photo, he added some stuff to the base meal) and it was easy to add additional food to the meal. In terms of spice level we found that “spicy” was just the right level if you like a bit of spice without it taking over your whole meal. The place isn’t very big which made for a cosy atmosphere but during certain times you might not be able to get a seat (around 6pm it was fine for us). All in all great place, food, staff, chef - would 100% go again

Amazing experience! The staff was incredibly friendly, even taking the time to ask where we were from, which made us feel so welcome. The atmosphere was cozy, and the food was absolutely phenomenal. I had the chicken cutlet curry, which was perfectly crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, paired with a rich, flavorful curry sauce. My friend got the hamburg steak curry, and it was just as delicious—juicy, well-seasoned, and perfectly complemented by the curry. Every bite was fantastic, and we’ll definitely be coming back the next time we travel to Japan!

We've been in Kyoto for a few days eating at the "hot spots". We've been feeling a bit underwhelmed after living in Taiwan and traveling all over Asia for the last decade. We were visiting Hei'an Temple and needed a place to eat during the afternoon breaks when most of the restaurants close. This was one of the only places we could find, and we ended up very lucky. This is a gem. Great flavors. Cold water with ice cubes in the glasses. Cool A/C. The gentleman working was very polite and spoke some English. The prices and portions were amazing. Got a nice little salad for less than US$2! As an American, that's impossible to see anymore. Clean and welcoming atmosphere. It feels very local. This has been just such a satisfying experience after the last few days. It's like we went into a different world here. Hope we can find more places like this.
