Such a fun experience! 🍶✨ The tour takes you through the history of sake, followed by a tasting, which was definitely my favorite part 😂 It’s interesting, enjoyable, and absolutely worth visiting if you’re in Fushimi. Just one warning: please don’t come with an empty stomach! 😵💫🍶
View on GoogleVisited the Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum in Fushimi and honestly it was a really interesting experience. The place gives you a good understanding of the history of sake brewing in Kyoto and how the whole process works from start to finish. I liked how they displayed the old brewing tools and explained the traditional methods. It’s not too big, so it’s easy to walk through at a comfortable pace without feeling rushed. You can really appreciate how much craftsmanship goes into making sake. The best part was definitely the sake tasting at the end. It was a nice way to experience the flavors after learning about the brewing process. Even if you’re not a big sake drinker, it’s still worth visiting just to understand the culture behind it. Over at the shop they also do delivery to local hotels too!
View on GoogleSolo traveller. I walked from the station. The museum was not that crowded on the week day. It’s a very large facility. You pay an entrance fee that includes a small souvenir sake cup and 3 coins to try 3 sake at end of the tour. Good value. Start with video screening then a walk through the general museum and end at the sampling area and finally exit through the shop.
View on GoogleStepping into a four-hundred-year-old sake stronghold along Fushimi’s historic canals feels like walking into the living, breathing bedrock of Japanese brewing culture." Four stars. Gekkeikan Ōkura Sake Museum sits right in the heart of Fushimi, where the legendary spring water has been fueling sake masters since 1637. For a mere 600 yen entry fee, you get a front-row seat to history. You wander past massive wooden vats, ancient brewing tools, and vintage branding that dates back centuries, all housed in iconic white-walled kura storehouses. The ticket even comes with a neat little souvenir tasting cup and three tokens to sample their pours at the end—including crisp junmaihoshis and rich, sweet plum wines that make the journey south of central Kyoto completely worth it. So why pull back a star? Because it’s very much a self-guided, quick-hit museum experience. If you show up during peak tour group hours, you'll be shuffling past display cases shoulder-to-shoulder with crowds, and the tasting area can feel a bit like a rapid-fire assembly line rather than a leisurely lounge where you can sit and converse with a master brewer. It’s an absolute bargain for a dose of pure Kyoto heritage and a quick nip of legendary sake. Go early, drink in the history, and wander the canal paths outside right after.
View on GoogleWe had a fabulous brewery museum tour, tasting and food pairing with Kyoko yesterday. Kyoko is passionate about sake, very knowledgeable, entertaining and speaks perfect English tanks to having lived in California as a teenager. The course is well structured and most informative. I highly recommend the experience.
