This is a nice little hidden gem, they even have a lot of decent signs in English. One of the desk staff at the museum even came out and gave my kids origami paper to play with while they were waiting. They have great little models and diagrams to build, and a lot of interesting facts about history if you're into Japanese history. The docents were really polite too.

I wanted to stay all day but my wife only allowed me two hours 😩 I wanted to feel the spirit and soul of the local people who lived here for thousands of years. The special exhibition room had many historical household items, TVs, washing machines, kitchen tools, many of them are also in my wife's Kasagi family home!

I visited on 2025/8/9. You can see stone tools from the Upper Paleolithic period (about 2万 years ago), Jomon pottery such as tanged projectile points from the beginning of the Jomon period, dotaku bronze bells, iron-sword-shaped stone swords and stone knives from the Yayoi period, and cylindrical coffins and bronze mirrors from the Kofun period. This time I stopped by on my way home after walking around Tsubai Otsukayama Kofun. I was able to view detailed materials on the approximately 33 triangular-rimmed bronze mirrors with deity and animal motifs excavated from Tsubai Otsukayama Kofun. I recommend this museum to anyone who wants to take a thorough look.

I thought it might be cool to be able to read old documents~, so I tried a beginner's course even though I didn't have the skills It was difficult but really fun If transportation were more convenient, I would have liked to keep attending

I visited for “The Excavated Japanese Archipelago 2025.” It's a special exhibition touring 4 museums nationwide, displaying excavated objects newly uncovered by archaeological investigations in recent years. The actual excavated objects are presented alongside replicas reconstructing their complete forms, and you can get very close to the exhibits, which is nice. The building and exhibition spaces feel somewhat aged, but apparently the permanent exhibition will be renovated, so I'm looking forward to that. I walked from Kamikoma Station, but it's quite a long walk, so I recommend coming by car.
