The Yubari Coal Mine Museum is one of the best coal mine museums we’ve ever visited. It offers a fascinating glimpse into the life and history of coal miners, giving visitors a deep appreciation for their hard work and resilience. The museum features a mine shaft and underground exhibits that truly immerse you in the experience, making you feel what it was like to be a miner during those times. While the museum is closed during winter, we were fortunate to visit during its open season. We also had the incredible opportunity to hear an expert share insights about the history of the coal mine, which made our visit even more meaningful and engaging. Interestingly, the site once housed a theme park that has since closed, adding a layer of nostalgia to the experience. Despite this, the museum itself remains a treasure for those interested in history and industrial heritage. Our family had an amazing time exploring the exhibits and learning about the coal mining industry in Yubari. If you’re in the area during the warmer months, this museum is an absolute must-visit!
View on GoogleGood value and full of interesting exhibits and information. There is a live reenactment of how some of the mining machines would have worked in the late days of the mine, which is fully in Japanese. If you are in Yubari, I would recommend visiting, though make sure to get there before its early closing time. Parts of the museum are sadly closed, which I suspect is due to lack of funding or visitor interest, so showing some support to it wouldn't hurt. There is also a nice shrine beside it, so remember to have a look before you go.
View on GoogleA great museum telling you the coal mining history of Yubari, and the city’s endeavors of surviving from a bankruptcy.
View on GoogleEducational and well set up. Just needs English explanations (an English pamphlet or audio guide will be a good start). Small souvenir shop at the main entrance.
View on GoogleNice location but the mines are closed for winter. Reopen on 20 April.
