The Shimoyoichi Unjoya Trading Post Historical Site is a fascinating glimpse into Hokkaido’s early trade and cultural exchange history. Once a vital hub for trade between the indigenous Ainu people and Japanese merchants, the site preserves the atmosphere of the Edo period through well-maintained buildings and informative displays. Visitors can walk through reconstructed storehouses and trading halls, learning about the goods that were once exchanged, such as dried fish, kelp, and daily necessities. The historical panels, some with English explanations, provide valuable context about the economic and cultural interactions of the time. The surrounding area is quiet and scenic, adding to the immersive historical experience. This is a great stop for history enthusiasts or anyone interested in learning more about Hokkaido’s past.

The path overlooking the garden was a peaceful place to be. I sat there for a while enjoying the scenery. This place was one of the highlights of the day!

This Ainu-Wajin trading post is actually newer than you may expect as it precedes the annexation of Hokkaido by a mere 20 years or so. That being said, the admission fee is modest and the place provides some shade on a hot summer day. You may as well give it a shot if you came to Yoichi for the whisky museum, but you are not missing much if you skip it

The last surviving trading post in Hokkaido. It a great small attraction that should have more visitors. It's nicely set up, and your free to explore the Edo/Meiji era building.
