One of Yoichi’s most fascinating natural landmarks is Candle Rock, a striking sea stack that rises dramatically from the waters just off the coast. True to its name, this rock formation resembles a giant candle standing alone at sea, especially when viewed during sunset or on misty days when its silhouette becomes even more pronounced. Candle Rock is a popular spot for photographers and nature lovers looking to experience Yoichi’s rugged coastal beauty. While there's no designated parking area, visitors often stop briefly along the roadside to admire the view. It's a quick and scenic stop that adds a memorable highlight to any road trip along the Shakotan Peninsula.

View on GoogleI just love how amazing nature can be! Along the coast, there are many awesome rock formations.
View on GoogleI went to see ローソク岩. It’s a strangely shaped rock that looks as though it’s standing all alone on the sea, and from a distance it really looks like a huge candle. Personally, it also looked like a witch’s finger to me. (laughs) It isn’t a flashy tourist destination, but combined with the quiet Sea of Japan, it has a distinctive presence. Thinking about how nature created this landscape over many years makes its grandeur all the more astonishing. It’s a spot I’d definitely want to stop by when visiting 余市町.
View on GoogleI stopped by ローソク岩 while driving around 積丹半島. A single tall, slender rock towers out of the sea, and just as its name suggests, it really is shaped like a candle. It was beautiful against the Shakotan-blue sea, and I could feel the grandeur of this unusual rock created by nature. It isn’t somewhere to spend a long time, but it’s perfect for a casual stop and some photos during a drive. Visiting at sunset seems like it would offer an even more magical view.
