Even though we arrived 30 minutes before closing, they kindly showed us around. Contrary to my expectations, there was a great deal worth seeing. The depth of Kumaishi's history in Hokkaido and the culture of daily life back then were easy to understand, and there were plenty of exhibits. There are campsites, park golf courses, hot springs, and other facilities nearby, so it looks like you could also enjoy sightseeing throughout the surrounding area.
View on GoogleYou can enjoy it quietly at your own pace. There were so many things I hadn't known about, such as records of tsunamis during the Edo period.
View on GoogleThe staff are kind and courteous. I saw the exhibit about measures against brown bears. Hearing a hunter's stories and trying a mock hunting rifle reminded me just how frightening brown bears are. It was a good experience.
View on GoogleYou can discover lesser-known sides of Kumaishi. Some interesting dogu clay figurines are also on display. There are stories about its prosperity through herring, as well as tsunami damage caused by Oshima's eruption. The exhibits are easy to understand for children and adults alike.
View on GoogleThe content is extensive, covering trade between the Ainu and Wajin, explorers' footsteps, changes in herring fishing, and displays of fishing gear. Kumaishi is introduced through very accessible exhibits. I admire whoever planned and supervised this museum.
