Wakkanai Youth Science Museum (稚内市青少年科学館) is a small but enjoyable science museum located next to Wakkanai Aquarium near Cape Noshappu, making it an easy addition to a day of sightseeing in the area. Admission is excellent value, as visitors can purchase a combined ticket with Wakkanai Aquarium for just 500 JPY per person, allowing access to both attractions. One of the highlights is the Planetarium, which features a beautiful star projection show that is both relaxing and educational. The presentation is well done, although the show duration feels a bit short and leaves you wanting more. The museum itself contains a variety of interactive exhibits and displays related to science, astronomy, technology, and the natural environment of northern Hokkaido. While not a large facility, it provides plenty of opportunities for children to learn through hands-on experiences and exploration. The staff are exceptionally friendly and helpful, contributing to a welcoming atmosphere throughout the visit. Overall, this is a fun and affordable attraction, especially for families with children or anyone looking for an educational stop near Cape Noshappu.
View on GooglePaid ¥500 yen for the Acquarium and this. Though it was a kid's science center, I thoroughly enjoyed the interactive booths! It was engaging and focused on educating us to better care for our earth. Definitely a must stop destination, especially if you have children. For adult enthusiasts, the second floor is also accessible for other valuable collections. Underrated but something I believe is worth checking out. This, just like the rest of Wakkanai, also has kind and welcoming staffs. Be sure to bring a notebook for the stamps!
View on GoogleThe Wakkanai Youth Science Museum (稚内市青少年科学館) is a small but interesting science museum connected to the Wakkanai Aquarium. If you’re already in the area, it’s a nice place to visit and bring your kids, especially for those interested in science and technology. While not a large facility, the museum offers interactive exhibits, a planitarium, and educational displays that can be enjoyable for both kids and adults. Its connection to the aquarium makes it a convenient addition to your itinerary if you’re exploring Wakkanai. If you have time, it’s worth a quick visit!
View on GoogleI visited on 2026年8月20日. The museum is divided into floors 1 and 2, with plenty of learning equipment and hands-on exhibits for children on floor 1. Personally, I really liked the model of the Antarctic research ship. Floor 2 has a completely different, approachable atmosphere, almost like a university club exhibition, with various materials on display. The neatly arranged ammonite fossils were particularly impressive, despite their understated presentation. The exhibits are interesting and adults can enjoy them too, but the air conditioning was not working when I visited, making this the hottest-feeling place on my Wakkanai trip this time (you may need to be careful in summer).
View on GoogleThis science museum is in the same place as the aquarium we just visited! The combined ticket is only 500 yen—unbelievably good value(。・ω・。) I didn’t have very high expectations before going in, but once inside I was absolutely amazed!! There are loads of fun hands-on facilities, with lots of interactive stations you can operate yourself It’s absolutely nothing like boring government policy publicity. It’s not just great for bringing kids to play—adults can have a really fun time too( ̄▽ ̄)! (◡‿◡ฺ✿) The Antarctic resource center displays lots of impressive equipment and models used by Antarctic observation teams to spend the winter. The coolest thing is that you can actually touch real "Antarctic ice" yourself—so unusual! Head upstairs to the second-floor exhibition and there are also various rocks and fossils to see~ After looking around the whole place, I felt a lot of care had gone into the content, and you can learn lots of fun things while playing Only 500 yen together with the aquarium next door is really amazing value! If you come to Cape Noshappu, I really recommend stopping by here to pass some time and try the activities(。•̀ᴗ-)✧
