An observatory at 宗谷岬 in 稚内市. You can look out over 宗谷岬, the northernmost point of mainland Japan. In good weather, it is also possible to see サハリン to the north. The observatory displayed a timeline of former 樺太, which was once Japanese territory.

宗谷岬(稚内市) The feeling of reaching the northernmost point: Standing at the tip of the cape gives you a strong sense that “I really am at the northern edge.” Varied scenery: The gradients woven by the blue sky and sea change with the time and season, and drift ice can also be seen in winter. A unique series of Japan's northernmost attractions: In and around the cape are the “northernmost vending machine,” “northernmost toilet,” “northernmost gas station,” and more. Souvenirs and certificates can also be purchased. Tourism facilities and access: There are 72 parking spaces, and it is about a 40-minute drive from 稚内駅. Public buses are limited, and a round trip can sometimes take more than 1 hour.

You can collect a certificate here; it's a shelter when the wind is strong.

Visited on November 22, 2024! It hadn't snowed yet, but the wind was so strong I felt I might be blown away. With the low temperature too, my back teeth wouldn't stop chattering, and my face felt like it was about to freeze. It's a place worth visiting at least once in your life. I couldn't spot the Northern Territories, sob.

You can get the city's official certificate of reaching the northernmost point for free. The one sold beside the cape apparently isn't an official city certificate. It seems quite a lot of people misunderstand this.
