This restaurant was one of the reasons to go to Wakkanai. It has been operating for >50 years now! It has a good reputation. We went to eat there for 2 meals during our 2 day stay in Wakkanai. First note: the uni is absolutely delicious. Second thought: I have slightly mixed feelings about this place. In general, a few days or a few weeks after my passage there, I have good memories. Details: The quality and quantity of the uni was very good. No complaints there. They have various seafood combination possibilities with your uni bowl: ikura (was not thrilled about it, compared to lots of other I have eaten) and flying fish roe (too salty); kani (crab, excellent, I recommend), hotate (scallop, very good, recommend) and salmon flake (nothing special, but it was part of my karafuto bowl choice). So on the 2nd visit we picked bowls with only uni and either kani or hotate. The rice was average. Now the disappointing part. On the first visit, we arrived at 13:55, there was plenty of free space in the restaurant. We ordered the karafuto bowl and the “2 stage” bowl (which really means 2 levels as there is uni buried inside the rice below the surface!). Service was prompt. We were taking our time eating and truly enjoying each bite as the uni, kani and hotate are excellent. The 2-stage bowl is actually huge! Seeing that they were trying to close up shop even before 14:30, and we were the last customers inside, and as we were getting full, I asked (in Japanese) if we could simply take out the rest of the 2-stage bowl, as we could surely not finish everything. They flatly told us “no cannot”. So we simply did our best to eat up all the seafood of the bowl and sadly left lots of rice, disappointed about such waste. It would have been so simple and appropriate to make 2 onigiri balls for us, we would have loved it. I understand it is not part of common Japanese restaurant culture to offer take out, but when you read all the stories about rice shortages, customers wasting rice at restaurants, AND you make the customers feel like they should be leaving when you want to close ahead of time… Another (small) disappointment is their shoyu (しょうゆ) : very ordinary kind of sauce for this uni… (not the end of the world as I don’t like to put much shoyu with uni… but still… ). Self service water and tea; they have beer if you want. Decoration: the walls are plastered with comments from previous happy customers. Global note: 3,8

Awesome sea urchin bowl. Sea urchin was fresh and had its natural sweetness. Cash only establishment.

If Hokkaido is famous for anything, it’s the incredible freshness of its seafood — and this little pink-walled spot delivers exactly that. At first glance, it looks casual and unassuming, but once you step inside, it’s clear you’ve found a local treasure. The restaurant focuses almost entirely on donburi (rice bowls), showcasing Hokkaido’s seasonal catch. Their signature bowls include: • Uni-don (うに丼) – rich, sweet sea urchin over rice. • Ikura-don (いくら丼) – glistening salmon roe with that perfect pop. • Kani-don (かに丼) – fresh crab meat piled generously. • Sanshoku-don (三色丼) – the “three-color bowl,” usually a combination of uni, ikura, and crab or salmon. • Goshoku-don (五色丼) – a deluxe five-color mix for those who want it all. • Shake-oyako-don (鮭親子丼) – salmon with salmon roe, a playful “parent-child” pairing. Each bowl comes in different sizes, so whether you’re looking for a light bite or a hearty feast, there’s an option. The uni here is as fresh as it gets — buttery, briny, and sweet. Pair it with ikura, and you get an incredible contrast of textures: creamy against the burst of roe. The rice is perfectly seasoned, lightly vinegared to balance the richness of the seafood. The atmosphere is simple and homey, with no frills — just the focus on great seafood. Outside, people queue patiently (a sign you’re in the right place). Inside, expect fast, efficient service. The staff may not speak much English, but the illustrated menu makes ordering easy. Prices are very fair considering the quality. A bowl of uni or ikura here costs only a fraction of what you’d pay overseas, yet the freshness is unmatched. This is the kind of restaurant you travel for: not flashy, but authentic, generous, and unforgettable. If you’re in Hokkaido, this is a must-stop for donburi lovers — and especially for anyone who dreams of tasting uni and ikura at their very best.

Fantastic place for unidon. Best uni we have ever tasted. Prices are very reasonable. No complaints at all. A must visit restaurant if you like seafood rice bowls if you ever come to Wakkanai.
