This museum, is free admission and located on the 2nd floor jat beside the onsen. It's a nice little museum with displays of miniatures, antiques, and old collectibles from the prefecture. The staff there was very welcoming and had 2 stamps at their office. Overall, it was a nice 15 minute walkthrough after our time at the onsen. Sadly there are no English translations so we had to use a translator on our mobile phone. Otherwise, it's worth seeing the Karafuto museum!
View on GoogleThe Karafuto Memorial Museum in Wakkanai offers a comprehensive exploration of Japan's former southernmost prefecture, Karafuto (now Sakhalin). Located on the second floor of the Fukuko Market, the museum provides free admission, making it accessible for all visitors. The exhibits include detailed panels, artifacts, and photographs that delve into the history, geography, and cultural significance of Karafuto during the period of Japanese rule. One notable feature is the documentary film showcasing the end of the nine maidens in Mooka, providing a poignant insight into the region's complex history. For history enthusiasts, the Karafuto Memorial Museum is an invaluable resource, offering a deep dive into the region's past. The museum's accessible location and free admission make it a worthwhile stop for those interested in understanding the historical ties between Japan and the Sakhalin region.
View on GoogleThis place along with Cape Soya really made my second trip to Japan. Seeing the history of my people along with Japanese was very interesting. The fact its near a fish market and a onsen was also wonderful. Beautiful city with such rich history. Wakkanai is truly a hidden gem for tourism.
View on GoogleA great peice of history explained and preserved. Not much English but google translate is always very helpful.. Staff were lovely and document where you're from.
View on GoogleNice to visit, understand some history on land dispute between Japan and Russia, as a tourist only when I visited here, then I learned Cape Soya was not the more the North point of Japan back then.
