We really enjoyed visiting the Urakawa Town Hometown History Museum during our trip around the Hidaka region. It was a wonderful place to learn more about Urakawa's history, local culture, and the people who helped shape the town over the years. The exhibits gave us a better understanding of how the community developed and how closely its history is connected to the surrounding land and sea. As a family, we especially enjoyed taking our time to look at the historical displays and artifacts. It was interesting to see how everyday life in Urakawa has changed over the years and to learn more about the town beyond its famous horse-breeding industry. We are always happy to visit local museums like this because they give us a deeper appreciation of the places we travel to. It was a worthwhile stop and a great addition to our Urakawa itinerary.
View on GoogleI don't think many people would come just to see this place, and the exhibition is small, but I definitely recommend horse-racing fans make the trip here. It displays a taxidermy specimen of Hindostan, the father of five-title champion Shinzan, as well as exhibits related to Shinzan and Miho Shinzan. You can also look at horse skeletons and more, so I felt it was surprisingly worthwhile for its size… (as a horse-racing fan). If you're touring horse-breeding areas such as AERU and East, please visit here too.
View on GoogleThis museum is in a former school, so the displays are in good condition now, but preservation looks difficult going forward. Admission was free, but perhaps charging in the future would be fine. Everything on display seemed valuable. Please keep working to preserve it as a record for future generations.
View on GoogleA facility for learning about Urakawa's local history and nature. It opened in 1978(Showa 53)after renovating the former Higashi Elementary School. Inside are 5 sections: “Urakawa's Nature,” “Ancient Urakawa,” “When Urakawa Began Developing,” “Urakawa's Fishing,” and “Urakawa's Agriculture,” along with displays of a taxidermy white-tailed eagle, ammonite fossils, and Ainu materials. The partitions in the men's restroom seem to have been added later, but it still feels like an elementary-school restroom.
View on GoogleFree admission. An atmospheric local history museum in an old-looking closed school, with a separate small horse museum built on the same grounds. Finds excavated from nearby archaeological sites, exhibits showing Ainu life, everyday items and farm tools from the pioneering era, and fishing gear probably used until fairly recently were carefully sorted and displayed. The exhibits were fairly conventional, but easy to view because they were divided among rooms. The horse exhibition room in the garden in front is also free to visit.
