Great little local museum with a mixture of local wildlife and archeological information as well as some history of colonisation.

Free admission. Inside a town-run cultural facility that also houses a library, the exhibits occupy an entire spacious floor on the 1st floor, with plenty of room and an easy-to-view layout. Both the scale and content are reasonably substantial. It is more like a typical local history museum than a full museum, but the displays of Jomon pottery excavated nearby are elaborate, and each item has a carefully written explanation, which I viewed with interest. The exhibits begin with preserved specimens of plants and animals living near the town, followed by specimens from prehistoric eras, displays and explanations of Jomon artifacts, and an introduction to Ainu culture leading into modern and contemporary history. It was a museum with an easy-to-understand concept that lets you trace the historical progression step by step alongside the formation of the region.

The richness of the exhibits is astonishing: I learned a great deal about Urahoro's history, geography, and biology. Parts from the closed Kami-Atsunai Station have also been preserved. Apparently, looking around thoroughly can take an hour and a half. I definitely recommend it!

It is a new, clean facility housing both a museum and a library. As others have written, the exhibits on the town's history and living creatures (taxidermy specimens) are so extensive that I feel almost guilty that it's free. I think it takes about 20 minutes for a quick look or about 1 hour for a thorough visit. It's somewhere worth stopping by if you're nearby.
