The Tsukigata Kabato Museum is a captivating destination that provides visitors with a deep appreciation for the rich history and culture of the Tsukigata region. Made popular by its connection to the anime Golden Kamuy, the museum draws fans and history enthusiasts alike to explore its exhibits that delve into the Kabato region’s development and its ties to the historic Tsukigata Prison. The museum features a variety of well-curated exhibits showcasing the lives of prisoners, settlers, and locals who played key roles in shaping the town's identity. From historical artifacts and documents to photographs that vividly narrate the region's past, the displays are both educational and engaging. For fans of Golden Kamuy, visiting the museum offers a chance to connect with the historical backdrop that inspired parts of the anime’s storyline, making it a unique and meaningful experience. The building itself is designed to reflect the region's history, combining modern museum amenities with a rustic charm that echoes the Kabato area's heritage. The staff are exceptionally friendly and well-informed, eager to share the stories behind the exhibits and the museum’s connection to the anime. Their enthusiasm helps bring the history to life, whether you’re a casual visitor or a dedicated Golden Kamuy fan.

Taking pictures it’s prohibited inside the compound. Very sad, sinister history how cruely were treated also political prisoners at those times about a hundred+ years ago. Because not all prisoners were criminals… A decent and good quality museum presentation. Genuine aschives, photos, video presentations and even two prison cells in display.

I finally made it(^-^) They said looking around inside takes 20 minutes〜2 hours, but… wow〜it MIGHT🦆 take longer I think the time varies depending on whether the exhibits interest you Just ¥300円 for adults almost feels too cheap〜 I also understand that this is the history of 月形町 itself It’s different from 網走, but for history lovers and prison enthusiasts This is a place I really want to recommend There aren’t many souvenirs or goods Also, what I really want you to try is the experience of walking in prisoners’ leg shackles with an iron ball and the bell🔔 that isn’t LOVE ❤️LOVE Both are self-service, so I recommend them Next time I’d like to come and take my time having a conversation with the exhibits

If you read 吉村昭’s 「赤い人」, of course you’ll want to go, and it’s certainly a place you should visit. The worn stone steps at the entrance feel so raw and real. The hatred and desire to punish the prisoners of that time (although called prisoners, they were political prisoners) resonated with the episodes in the novel, and I found myself viewing the exhibits with deep emotion. My companion, who came along with me, found it so real that it made them feel sick.

2026.5 You enter through a passage from inside 樺戸監獄本庁舎 rather than through the building’s entrance. Inside, there are explanatory texts about the surveys conducted to establish a prison here, the prison’s operation, the development of transport routes by prisoners, and how the prison became a driving force in the development of 月形町. Since it serves as a museum, there are also taxidermy specimens of brown bears, deer, and other animals toward the end of the exhibition, but their state of preservation was not very good.
