Built in 1934 (Showa 9), this building formerly served as the old Kabutonuma post office and residence. Its role as a post office ended in 1981 (Showa 56). From 1981 (Showa 56), it became the Umemura family’s private local history museum. It was donated to the town in 1991 (Heisei 3), partially renovated, and reopened as a local history archive room in 1992 (Heisei 4). Alongside local historical materials belonging to the town’s pioneer, Shojiro Umemura, it displays the post office’s history, the postmaster’s belongings, and materials related to the Kabutonuma area. The building has an innovative exterior, with a wooden “kabuto-zukuri” roof design in the Kanto-Koshinetsu style. Apparently, silkworm farmers’ houses in Asahikawa have the same design.
View on GoogleThis is Kabutonuma’s local history archive room. It is open on Saturdays and Sundays from May through October, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The exterior has a lot of character. Beside the building is a monument to the area’s settlement, and it seems settlers from Gifu Prefecture developed the area through considerable hardship. Around Kabutonuma, however, there are damaged houses and the like. Perhaps because of depopulation and an aging population, it feels very lonely here now.
