A nice scenic hike to view the ruins of the historic eruption. It was a relatively simple hike that took roughly 30 minutes to reach the observatory deck.

View on GoogleEven at the foot of Mount Usu, who would have thought an eruption could occur in a place where people were living their everyday lives? This place makes you feel the threat of nature. You can get here from the north parking lot in about 12〜13 minutes.
View on GoogleFrom the south entrance parking lot🅿️🚗, head up the southern walking trail, and you will reach the 2nd observation deck. From here, you can see the submerged section of the old national highway, the collapsed remains of the factory that made the famous confection わかさいも, and the pitiful sight of houses destroyed by ground uplift and left collapsed. In the other direction, you can see the townscape by Lake Toya, and on the opposite side, even Uchiura Bay☺️. Another way to reach this 2nd observation deck is to climb up from 洞爺幼稚園 on the southern side (there is free parking🅿️🚗 nearby), looking at damaged facilities such as the わかさいも factory along the way. It is about 800m from the parking lot🅿️🚗. I recommend this route👏.
View on GoogleA valuable place where you can really appreciate the changes in the town's terrain The undulating road and disaster-damaged houses make you feel the immense power of nature The walking paths are maintained and easy to walk on You can explore it in about 30-60 minutes
