This is a very chaotic ホッキ clam museum😂 I think the whole building used to be the museum—have they scaled it down a little? Admission is free. The fortune-slip strings are tangled, so the generous setup lets you pull out every single one without missing any (lol). I'd like you to read them one by one and have a little chuckle🤣 Some fishing rods have lost their hooks (S-shaped hooks) and have a loop at the tip instead, but the loop makes it harder and more fun♬ Shell matching is surprisingly difficult, and my son was really absorbed in it too☺ Scattered among these amusements are things you can learn, such as the history of ホッキ clam fishing and how to tell a ホッキ clam's age from its size. Since there were no other visitors, my son and I enjoyed reading the reference materials and playing for about 1h🥰 The mindset of "I'm going to enjoy this💪" is important (lol). But it really is fun💓
View on GoogleVisited on May 1, 2025. Admission is free. When I arrived before 15:00, they were tidying up at the end of opening hours, but they let me in. There is hardly any information about ホッキ clams; the place is filled with creations made from ホッキ clam shells. Shell matching is difficult. The jigsaw puzzles made from broken shells look difficult too. It was a handmade facility that both adults and children seemed likely to enjoy.
View on GoogleA museum next to 海の駅ぷらっとみなと市場, filled with creations themed around ホッキ clams. An art museum might be a more appropriate description than an information museum…. Just enjoy it without overthinking things. Admission is free, and you can look around freely.
View on GoogleA ほっき clam museum on the west side of 海の駅ぷらっとみなと市場 in 港町, 苫小牧市. I was wandering around 海の駅ぷらっとみなと市場 looking for somewhere to eat, and when I went outside, there was a museum. An explanation said that 苫小牧市 has long had Japan's largest ほっき clam catch, and that the long-established museum had reopened at its current location. Inside, there are ほっき clam shell-matching activities, messages written to ほっき clams, and ほっき clam characters. The museum mixes a chaotic, hard-to-make-sense-of space that makes you laugh with a slightly serious space. Incidentally, when I visited, it was unattended, and I had no idea what I was supposed to do. It's free, you can learn about ほっき clams, and above all it's a museum that makes you laugh, so I think it's worth visiting once.
View on GoogleAdmission is free. An unattended facility intended to introduce ホッキ clams; 5 minutes should be enough to look around. Inside are piles of randomly displayed exhibits and materials, making it a much more disorderly space than an ordinary information museum. There is little well-organized, solid information, and even finding it is difficult. It even has a distinctly local, folk-like atmosphere and isn't properly put together as a museum, but it's free, so I have no complaints.
