Merb
Next to Michi-no-Eki Touma, the coffee and curry shop MERB (Mābu) is a 6-minute drive from Touma Station. We carry on the flavor of “Komekometei,” a long-established curry shop in Asahikawa that closed in 2017, and still use the founder's spice blend to this day. Vegetables and fruits are simmered for a long time, then rested to let the flavor settle. The only things you can see are the meat and cutlets. You can choose from pork, chicken, beef, cutlet, hamburg steak, or small shrimp. There's also the mild GM (Grandmother), a homestyle curry like grandma would make. On the tables, we have fukujinzuke, rakkyo, and raisins pickled in shochu. “We don't cut corners. We can't.” Takeout is also available…

Unique curry rice. The flavours are not the usual Japanese curry. Had the beef curry rice which was on the Spicer side and the beef was really soft. My husband had the cutlet version which was really nice and tender. Would definitely recommend getting them! Didn't managed to snap a pic of the cutlet (too hungry and delicious) 😋 went around 1pm, no crowd.
View on GoogleCame to the roadside station for lunch, and since someone wanted curry, we went into MERB. They have chicken, pork, and beef curry, plus cutlet, hamburg steak, and small shrimp, and there's also a milder GM (Grandma / Grandmother). I was curious, so I ordered the GM. It's definitely on the sweet side, but it had a slight kick. Apparently it carries on the taste of a curry shop that used to be in Asahikawa. I wonder if it was a popular place—I'm not local so I don't know, but I enjoyed a nostalgic taste and aroma. Thanks for the meal.
View on GoogleI'd known for a while that this is the curry from Komekometei, which used to be in Asahikawa, but this was my first time going. I don't know what Komekometei tasted like so I can't compare, but it felt like a specialty-shop curry and had a premium feel. Next time I'd like to try the coffee ☕ too.
View on GoogleShop name: Coffee and Curry Shop merb I had the pork curry, but honestly, for what you get, 1,100 yen felt a bit overpriced. The curry itself isn't bad, but there's nothing special about it—just very ordinary. The ingredients were sparse too, and I didn't get satisfaction to match the price. When I ordered a large serving, the rice came as “another mound next to the mound,” which looked a bit awkward. I'd like a little more care in the plating. The interior is calm, and the wide coffee selection is appealing, but as for the curry, I'm on the fence about coming back.
View on GoogleI ordered the hamburg steak curry for 1200 yen, and my son, a third grader, ordered the GM (a sweet curry like grandma would make) with a cutlet topping, 750 yen + 700 yen. The food came out about 10 minutes after ordering. The regular curry, as the staff mentioned when taking our order, was surprisingly spicy and on the hot side—a classic, no-frills curry flavor like restaurants have served for ages, and the hamburg steak was tasty too. The GM curry is sweet, perfect for kids. Kids might find the regular one too spicy to eat, so I recommend this one. The cutlet was crispy too, and my son happily ate it. I wouldn't recommend it to serious curry lovers, but I think it's a tasty curry that anyone can enjoy.
