This is one of the most unique attractions on the shores of Lake Kussharo. Armed with nothing more than a shovel, you can dig your own natural hot spring right in the sand. As you dig deeper, naturally heated onsen water begins to bubble up from underground. It's a fascinating experience and a fun way to witness Hokkaido's geothermal activity firsthand. What makes this place even more interesting is the contrast between the hot spring water and the lake itself. While the water from the ground is pleasantly warm, Lake Kussharo remains refreshingly cold, allowing you to experience two completely different temperatures side by side. It's a wonderful example of the region's unique natural environment. Overall, this is a fun and memorable spot that you won't find in many other places. If you're visiting Lake Kussharo, I highly recommend bringing a shovel and trying to dig your own natural hot spring—it's a truly unforgettable experience.
View on GoogleA lakeside beach where hot spring water rises naturally through the sand. I've experienced something similar at Arimura Beach on Sakurajima in Kagoshima, where you can dig into the sand and find hot spring water—but only at low tide. One advantage of Sunayu is that it's on a lake rather than the ocean, so you can enjoy the experience regardless of the tides. The water isn't quite warm enough for a proper foot bath, but watching families dig into the sand together in search of warm spots was surprisingly heartwarming. The children seemed to be having a wonderful time, and the experience itself is unique enough to make the visit worthwhile. The area around the lake has been developed into a small recreational spot, with swan-shaped pedal boats, restaurants, and other facilities. I also noticed signs advertising an open-air hot spring overlooking the lake, although I didn't have a chance to try it myself. It's a pleasant stop, especially for families, and the chance to dig for naturally heated water beside a beautiful lakeshore is something you won't experience very often. Unfortunately, since I visited in summer, there were no swans to be seen.
View on GoogleSunayu Onsen is one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited in Hokkaido. The frozen lake in the distance during winter, the swans gathered by the shore, and the glowing hues of the sunset all come together to create a surreal, otherworldly feeling, as if you are completely detached from the rest of the world.
View on GoogleMy experience at Sunayu Beach, Lake Kussharo, Hokkaido. During our recent Hokkaido trip, we visited Lake Kussharo early one morning. The scenic Sunayu beach, with its stretch of sandy shore, offered breathtaking views of the lake. What made this spot unique was the natural hot-spring water flowing directly onto the beach – dig a hole in the sand, and warm water would gush out! It is perfect for soaking one's feet and unwinding. The surrounding area featured plenty of trees and ample space for a leisurely morning stroll, which we thoroughly enjoyed. The combination of natural beauty and relaxing atmosphere made Sunayu beach an unforgettable experience.
