Parking fee ¥500. Awesome view from Mt. IO Mokmok base. Just a short walk and you get to see a couple of active sulfur vents. Get close the experience the steam but be very careful not to get scalded. Can be very hot when you get too near. We did a quick stop over at the souvenir shop ended up bought lots of snacks for our ride back to our airbnb 😂 PS: don’t forget to try their sulfur-made products and ice cream!
View on GoogleMt Io is an interesting place to visit still considered an active volcano in Shiretoko. We've visited many similar sites in Iceland and Turkey where the earth breathes through the surface vents producing the boiling water and sulfur fumes. Here the high column pushes the steam high into the sky and one can walk up to the holes to feel the heat and catch the action. Once you are done exploring the volcano head to the shop to eat an onsen egg(there is special instructions on how to peel the egg... with brown tape provided) and get a melon ice cream, sit back, relax and watch the volcano steam up while at it.
View on GoogleI went on a cloudy morning, but I could still (maybe even more so) see multiple columns of steam coming out of the ground. It was an absolute sight to behold, both from a distance and up close. The small station next to the parking lot is also very nice and clean.
View on GoogleAlthough smaller than Owakudani in Hakone, this spot offers a more relaxed experience with an easier climb and fewer visitors. The strong sulphur aroma is just as intense 😆, making it feel like a genuine natural hot spring destination.
View on GoogleBeautiful but it smells🥲 Parking is 500 yen cash only, the parking pass can be used again for the lake
