Displays of Paleolithic and Jomon history, pottery, stone tools, and more. Not only tools formerly used in farming, forestry, and fishing, but also electrical appliances from the early Showa era are displayed in good condition. A casually placed jukebox was full of nostalgic songs. Relics from a station during the national railway era, on a line now closed (the station building is also gone), are displayed too. I was also surprised all over again by how many cultural assets 知内町 has. I felt I understood 知内町 a little better. ※Precious photos of 北島三郎 during his childhood and student years were also on display.

About 13 minutes by car from JR木古内 Station. Located along national route 228. There was free parking for about 10 cars in front of the facility. This town museum opened in 1984 with the motto “look, listen, touch, and think,” aiming to develop various activities. Admission is free. The exhibits include burial goods found in Japan’s oldest grave, excavated in the town’s 湯の里 district, materials from the former 松前線, and electrical appliances used during the Showa 30s. While looking at the exhibits, you can learn the history of 知内町 from ancient times to the present. The jukebox had a selection of nostalgic songs. It was a fun and interesting place, like traveling back to the Showa era. Thank you.

Surprisingly, it’s a young town, having become a town only about 50 years ago. Admission is free. Apparently visitor numbers are quite low, so the lights and so on are switched off to save energy, but the attendant turns them all on for you. Near the entrance there’s a video about 50 years of town administration; watching it takes 45 minutes. Everyday items, things related to the former 江差線, film projectors, and more are displayed.

You can see a tablet block instrument up close. Recommended for railway fans of the national railway generation. You can also see retro Showa-era electrical appliances.
