2025·R7.11.16 My first visit, on the way to watch "AMF(Ainu Music Festival)2025" held in Mitsuishi. This elevated ground was Shakushain's final stronghold, and imagining that Shakushain might have stood here is deeply moving. To reach Makuta Park, cross Shizunai Bridge on National Route 235 from central Shizunai, climb "Hamanasu-zaka" (a fairly steep slope) toward the Makuta district for about 1㎞, then turn left and continue a little farther. Its area is reportedly 26.3 hectares. The observation deck is about a 5-minute walk west from the Makuta Park parking lot, built atop a cliff on the left bank of the Shizunai River. Apparently it used to have a roof, but now it doesn't (it feels open, and I think it's good without one). At an elevation of about 80m, you look down on the Shizunai River flowing into the Pacific Ocean below the cliff. At the river mouth, you can see the National Route 235 bridge, the iron railway bridge of the former Hidaka Main Line (already closed), and the pedestrian "Shibechari Bridge" spanning the green spaces on both banks. Central Shizunai spreads out across the river. A good spot for panoramic views of the sea, river, and plain.
View on GoogleA place where you can see all of Shinhidaka. It's very relaxing and spacious, so I recommend it.
View on GoogleAn observation deck overlooking central Shizunai! I visited to see the sunset, and the view was better than expected.
View on GoogleYou can look all around at the mountains and sea, which is pretty nice. Since it isn't a tourist spot, there are no people, and it feels great in good weather. I also picked some aralia shoots.
View on GoogleIt's on elevated ground, or perhaps the top of a cliff, that sort of place, so the scenery is quite good.
