Partly because of work, I had been coming here since before サンルダム was built, but the scenery has changed and the observation deck has been renovated. You climb up by stairs, and it is reasonably high. It's a hidden spot with a panoramic view of 下川. If you visit 下川, be sure to stop by!

An observation deck overlooking サンルダム, the reservoir, submerged forest, and other scenery from elevated ground. With nothing around it of a similar height, you can see all the way to the townscape of 下川町. You cannot reach it directly from the dam, so approach from the town center. There are no houses or anything nearby, so take precautions against bears.

Obon, August 2024… · __📝Kamikawa Journal by 竹浦梅四郎📝_ · It had been about 30 years since I properly visited 下川町 rather than just passing through… Back then, there was fierce debate over whether サンルダム should be built. What happened to the enormous numbers of yamame fish that were in サンル川 back then… And what does the completed サンルダム look like? Those thoughts brought me here… · _🐘象の鼻森林公園展望台🐘_ · From the town center of 下川町, the mountain road is paved but narrow, with giant knotweed protruding into the road in summer. After climbing a little, the observation deck appears. There is parking🅿️ for a few cars, but it isn't very spacious. After parking and climbing the observation deck stairs, the dam wall comes into view below, its concrete still looking brand-new. Looking to the opposite side, toward the northeast, a large flooded section of the reservoir stretches out The white, dead standing trees rising from the lakebed were illuminated by sunlight at that time, shining silvery white and creating a very magical scene Apparently, the observation deck's name comes from the shape formed by the trees around the reservoir and the reservoir itself looking like that… well… The reservoir is named 「しもかわ珊瑠湖」 珊瑠 uses 「珊」 from 珊瑚礁 and 「瑠」 from ラモス瑠偉. It is relatively new, but perhaps the water also flows through well; the water color I had been worried about was good and clear. I didn't visit the dam site, but given how fiercely its construction was debated, surely a properly functioning fish passage has been installed. It was a little journey that left me hoping the descendants of the yamame fish I met back then are still thriving.

I visited in 2022/8. I came because I could see it from the top of the dam. You can look down over the dam and the town. The road is wide and easy to drive on. There is parking space.
