Clean, quiet, quick, and hits the spot so effectively that it’s almost brutal. It tastes like home and I wish I could pop out my tongue for a new one to re-experience that magical moment of frenching that sweet sweet broth anew one more time. Demolished my udon in 8 minutes flat and it warmed up my no-core-heat-body so, so well that it was sinful. Definitely going back - especially since the price was so so cheap for its quality.

View on GoogleAn udon shop in Nishikimachi, Shimokawa Town. It was only here that I first learned that hand-stretched udon is one of Shimokawa's specialty products. The hand-stretched udon made from Shimokawa-grown wheat has little chewiness and is easy to eat. The dashi flavor is good too—this is a dish you should have when you come to Shimokawa. The shop has counter seats as well as tatami seating, so it can accommodate all kinds of customers. It's in the center of Shimokawa's downtown area, so it's easy to stop by.
View on GoogleI visited Shimokawa for the first time in a while on a business trip lunch. I had the squid tempura udon, today's recommendation. It also came with vegetable tempura, like an assorted tempura platter, so it felt like a great deal. The Shimokawa hand-stretched udon, which I hadn't had in a long time, was delicious. The business hours are from 11:00 to 13:30, so go early.
View on GoogleVisited 2025.10.02 I came for the first time with my eldest daughter, who is in first grade of elementary school. The reason is that this shop has a sign out front saying "No preschool children". Because of that, it took more than 2 years from when I learned about the shop and wanted to go until I actually visited. However, my second daughter is still 3 and not yet in school, so the whole family couldn't go, and I came with just my eldest. To conclude, I will never go again. The taste is good, but I was disappointed by the staff's attitude. Even though elementary school children and older are OK, if you're thinking of visiting with kids, please be very careful. I wondered whether it was right to state such a negative opinion in public, but I'm leaving this comment so that no more people have to feel the way I did. I visited around 11:30. It was a weekday and before lunchtime, so the only customer was one person at the counter. After I entered, I was demanded to disinfect with alcohol without being given a choice. The reason was "COVID-19 infection prevention". My child has sensitive skin so I didn't want to do it if possible, but they didn't seem to listen and acted as if to say "please do it", so I reluctantly disinfected. After that too, they never looked at us, and just said flatly "This seat, please" and showed us to our seat. At first glance I just thought "maybe the owner is a quiet person", but since I had seen the "No preschool children" sign at the front, my impression was that small children, even if elementary school age or older, aren't very well regarded. The table seats are originally 6, but as of October 2025 only 3 can be used. This is also due to infection prevention, and there were conversation restrictions as well (OK if in a quiet voice). Because there were few customers, the food was ready about 5 minutes after ordering. It tasted good and my eldest daughter ate happily too. However, as noon approached, the table seats quickly filled up (since only 3 could be used), and the number of customers waiting for a table kept growing. Then the pressure from the shop grew stronger. I had finished eating quickly, but my eldest daughter eats rather slowly, so I waited quietly trying not to make her self-conscious. However, the owner, looking irritated, said "May I clear this away?" and began clearing my plate. Since I had already finished, that was fine, but afterwards they kept watching us closely. I felt like I was being watched with the message "hurry up and leave", and it was very hard to eat. In fact, the moment my daughter finally finished eating, they immediately brought the bill and said "May I take your payment?", again without giving any choice, telling us to leave right away. I felt quite unpleasant by then, so I said "Sorry for eating slowly", and the reply was just one line: "We're a sole proprietorship." Does that mean that because they run it alone, during the busy lunch hour we should be considerate and leave quickly? I also said "Sorry for eating slowly" at the register, but there was no comment at all and I was ignored. We left with a very bad aftertaste. I have no idea what happened in the past or the background behind "No preschool children", but I will not be visiting again. Since the shop is only open during the daytime, if you visit with children I strongly recommend arriving between the 11:00 opening and 12:00.
