A unique and memorable view. The scenery certainly lives up to its name, "Road to the Sky." The best place to appreciate the illusion is from the middle of the road, looking west. Fortunately, traffic is usually very light, making it easy to stop briefly and enjoy the view. From there, the road really does seem to stretch all the way into the sky. The observation point also offers beautiful views of the surrounding countryside, with wide-open farmland creating a peaceful rural landscape.

Nothing special about this place except the wooden observation deck. Then again no way to place it to supposedly see the road heading towards the ocean when its facing the wrong direction. Best to imagine is to walk down a little towards the small road and take the picture of the straight road heading towards the sky at the end. That said, there were many other straight roads in similar fashion heading towards the sky if you position the camera at the correct angle. Just be careful of cars coming on either side of the road as this is at the high end of the road.

Stunning views of a 28km straight road with very few people, perfect for photos! I'd totally try running to the very end... if I had the time. ヽ( ̄д ̄;)ノ=3=3=3

The Road to the Sky Observatory, also known as the “Road to Heaven” (天に続く道), is one of the most iconic scenic spots in Shari Town, eastern Hokkaido. Located along a 28-kilometer stretch of perfectly straight road, this viewpoint creates the optical illusion that the road rises into the sky—especially breathtaking at sunrise or sunset. Surrounded by vast fields, windbreak trees, and views stretching all the way to the Sea of Okhotsk, the observatory is a favorite among photographers, cyclists, and road trippers. Built in 2018, the observatory features a simple wooden deck and a small parking area that can accommodate around eight cars. While there are no restrooms on site, the spot is open 24/7 and remains a peaceful place to pause, reflect, and take in the endless horizon. One of the most magical times to visit is during the autumn equinox, when the sun sets directly at the end of the road, enhancing the illusion that you’re driving into the sky.

Amazing viewpoint with a beautiful panoramic view of Shari and the surrounding mountains. The drive up is peaceful, and the scenery is especially stunning on a clear day. There is plenty of parking space, and the area is clean and well maintained. Definitely worth a stop if you’re visiting Shiretoko.
