ヤマシメ番屋Yamashime
We closed for this season on October 14, 2024. We look forward to seeing you again next year. This is a herring culture heritage facility that preserves and makes use of the "Yamashime Fukui Residence," a herring banya (fishermen's lodge) in Shakotan Town, which flourished as one of the leading herring grounds from the Meiji to the Showa era. Besides viewing historical materials on herring fishing, there's also a café offering the local dish "Sanpei-jiru," "iwanori onigiri" filled with salted sea urchin or cherry salmon, as well as coffee, cider, anmitsu, and a seafood curry made with plenty of Shakotan seafood.

Cozy setting with historical displays to peruse and they serve different food and beverage options. Stopped in for coffee on a cold rainy day and we were warmed by the hospitality and banter with the guests and shopkeeper.
View on GoogleNice old wooden house. We are here at 10 thinking to have breakfast but the proprietor said no food til lunchtime. Just coffees to go. Disappointed that we couldn’t have any sit down food, not even pastries or rice balls. But the lady was nice and let the kids take a look around and let us get coffee to go.
