Takarajima, a treasure island shaped like a heart when seen from above. You pass by Takarajima on the Bikuni Underwater Observation Boat, but from that angle you can't tell whether it's a heart or not You can see the Shakotan Blue and huge flocks of seagulls, so the view from the boat is fun Takara-jima means Treasure Island. View on GoogleIt's an island in Bikuni, Shakotan Town. Long ago, when herring were still being caught, large amounts were caught around this island too, so as a symbol of that, the local people came to call it Takarajima (Treasure Island). They say the island is heart-shaped when seen from above.
View on GoogleThe Legend of Takarajima (Heart Island) A monster appeared off the coast of Bikuni and herring could no longer be caught, so the chief sent the man who was his daughter's lover to slay the monster. With a helmet and sword, he splendidly defeated the monster. However, the daughter, in despair believing that even he would be no match for the monster, threw herself into the sea, and the man who returned to the village followed her. Afterward, as the herring returned to Bikuni, a helmet-like rock appeared, and it came to be called Takarajima.
