2024.5.1 It was Doyo no Ushi no Hi, so I came to an unagi restaurant in Nishimachi. I entered right when it opened at noon, and as you'd expect on Ushi Day, it quickly became almost full. I splurged a little and ordered nakawari-ju for ¥4700. After receiving eel-bone crackers and pickles, I waited 15 minutes. Apparently the eel was from Kyushu. The flesh was plump and springy, the sauce had just the right sweetness, and it was so delicious that the time spent eating seemed to fly by. Next time I'd like to savor it a little more. The homemade pudding and coffee after the meal were delicious too.
View on GoogleI could feel the owner's attention to detail throughout. The unaju was fluffy with a light amount of sauce. It felt refined. Personally, I prefer a hearty meal, so I found it slightly lacking. It's a matter of taste, so this is strictly my personal opinion.
View on GoogleThe eel's quality is far too poor. Are they serving a mix of domestic and imported eel? Each piece tastes different… I was happy to have pudding and coffee after the meal.
View on GoogleWith my wife's parents. The unaju seemed too heavy for her parents, who are over 70. Perhaps even more so because they were drinking beer too. I had nakawari; since I like a hearty meal, it was just right and delicious!
View on GoogleThe unaju, the after-meal coffee, and the pudding were all delicious. I was also impressed by the kindness in the service from the owner and his wife!
