The opening time was listed as 13:00, but I went in the morning and was feeling disappointed when they kindly made a special exception and let me look around. Thank you! You can learn about the settlement of tondenhei and their houses in Kita Ward, as well as the history of Sapporo's Kita Ward. 「屯田郷土資料館」 is a facility that conveys the history of the development of this area, once called 「篠路(しのろ)兵村」. A major feature is that it is not merely a public exhibition facility: its operation is supported by “love for the community,” with local residents collecting donations and working hard to establish it. Tondenhei settled in various parts of Sapporo, but only 「屯田」 in this Kita Ward remains as a place name. Visiting this museum to answer little questions like that can be fun too! Admission was free. A lot of local history museums and archives in Sapporo are free, aren't they? ※All photographic materials belong to the collection of 「屯田開拓記念館」. ※Permission to take photographs has been obtained

Admission is free. It is comprehensive for a free museum. The man at reception explains things carefully. It is helpful to have an older person knowledgeable about history explain things. I think the tondenhei house is the main attraction. Apparently it was relocated into the museum from another place. Panel exhibits show that the tondenhei were deployed in the Sino-Japanese War, the Russo-Japanese War, and the Satsuma Rebellion. 2025.10.10.

In the twenty-second year of Meiji, the Fourth Company of the First Tondenhei Battalion settled in Shinoro military village These tondenhei had two major missions First, to devote themselves to the front line of northern defense as tondenhei Second, to become pioneers in the development of Hokkaido The tondenhei who settled here were members of the former samurai class from prefectures in Shikoku, Kyushu, Hokuriku, and elsewhere, who devoted themselves to these missions with their families while enduring the cold and barren land It is a very, very small local history museum, but the purpose and lives of the tondenhei were explained in detail 2025-01-26

It is mainly a museum about Shinoro Tonden village, so you can learn the history of the Shinoro tondenhei! It doesn't feel like a museum about the tondenhei as a whole, so I think it's good to know that🙆 Apparently the staff who give explanations are generally absent on Mondays, but they let me in just to look around the museum. They were very kind and accommodating😁

I knew that rice used to be grown in Tonden, but I didn't know there was a story of such hardship behind it. I learned a lot. It was interesting
