If you are visiting Sapporo and are remotely interested in art, this is an amazing place to spend some time. You’ve maybe seen Hongo Shin’s sculptures before without knowing it and seeing some of them really up close and learning more about his methods, history and perspective is very gratifying. The Memorial House is particularly peaceful. I ended up arriving during a school trip, but it was really sweet to see the kids examining the pieces and doing their classwork. And then they left and I had the whole place practically to myself. I had visited the Outdoor Sculpture Garden at Sapporo Art Park the day before so this was a nice complement to that. Or, do this first and then the Sculpture Garden. I took a GO taxi here because the subways were delayed with a maintenance inspection but took a bus back and it was all very easy. And the staff was very kind. One of my very favorite experiences in Sapporo.

Great local museum that’s very quiet and has rotating exhibitions as well as stand exhibition of Honcho’s works.

Dissapointing permanent exhibition unless you are a fan of Hongo Shin.

A museum focused mainly on sculpture, nestled in the residential neighborhood of 宮の森. You visit 2 buildings, including the main building. Being a small museum, it has few visitors, making it a wonderful place to spend time with each individual artwork. In the main building you can experience 本郷新’s sculptures, while the new building offers special exhibitions. The works are powerful, and sharing the scenery the artist enjoyed is another experience unique to this place. Beyond having few people, it is in an upscale residential neighborhood, so it is incredibly quiet, with lovely views, perfect for a date or a breather. Access is good, and parking is available. It is a very rare facility in Sapporo, where there are few art museums.

There were almost no tourists, it was very quiet, and I was completely undisturbed. The museum staff were very friendly. There was no English, so I had to use a translation app to read the descriptions of the works. The exhibits were excellent. I had initially hesitated about coming because it was some distance from the subway and the weather was very hot. I saw a work by 山內壯夫 that I really loved, and it made me feel very happy. Besides the exhibits, the building itself was also beautiful. The only thing was that the toilets were not very clean.
