What a happy finding! I did not intend to visit here but made a stop out of curiosity while strolling the park. Turns out this museum’s a very well kept one, and the exhibition was impressive as well. Oh and the staffs were also extremely kind.
View on GoogleThe cafe and atmosphere of this cultural building is really nice and their changing exhibitions are great to learn more about the local arts and culture scene in Hokkaido. I recommend to take a break here after a nice walk in the park next door.
View on GoogleThe google map said it’s closed today, but it’s open.
View on GoogleIt’s inside 中島公園. Only the permanent exhibition section was open. Admission is 500円 for adults. It’s small, with no video section. They support various QR payments, but PayPay didn’t work, why?? It was a literature museum lacking in interest. It might be good for literature lovers, but,,,
View on GoogleThis place was packed with the history of literature connected to Hokkaido, from Ainu oral literature through the Meiji〜Taisho eras〜before, during, and after the war〜rapid economic growth〜the present day. The Meiji era was especially memorable. 幸田露伴, 国木田独歩, 石川啄木, 葛西善蔵, 岩野泡鳴. All wanderers. Roaming. Each was driven by an urgent personal circumstance, but after wandering and roaming they arrived in Hokkaido, then faced the pain of leaving that ideal land. Seeing them turn that into literature really resonated with me. It’s the blues. This is the blues. I think people who are struggling somehow and don’t connect with fortune-telling or self-help quotes on YouTube and such should come here. It’s a strange thing to say after coming to a literature museum, but ultimately, however skillful the words, their persuasiveness won’t resonate unless backed by the way someone has lived. The desperate lives of the great Meiji-era writers who wandered and roamed resonate so, so deeply with me. It hits you like a punch. --------------------------- The おばけのマール exhibition is on from 2025.11.22🥰 --------------------------- 2026.1.18 The マール exhibition has ended. Thank you, thank you😊 Choking back tears of emotion🥺
