A small building in town with no large information sign. It stands behind a gravel parking area facing the road (4-5 cars), so it could easily be overlooked. Inside, you can see exhibits from the Edo period to modern times, such as everyday utensils and old documents. Admission is free. For some reason? There was a display of current 雪印 ice cream at the entrance (not for sale).
View on GoogleA high-quality museum packed with exhibits. It's rich in 日高本線 railway enthusiast material too!
View on GoogleThe content is hard to believe is free, and there's so much worth seeing. Recommended. There are also materials about 日高本線 and more.
View on GoogleThe building looks a little worn and the space isn't large, but this history museum has plenty worth seeing. Admission is free. Exhibits about the region's nature, archaeological finds, items used by Ainu people, and modern everyday goods are common at other museums in Hokkaido too, but the captions here are well prepared, and it feels carefully maintained by the staff. It also has exhibits unique to this area, such as 様似山道 and materials related to 様似駅 on 日高本線, along with valuable materials including old documents from 等澍院, one of the 蝦夷三官寺, and the 矢本 family documents.
View on GoogleIt's a small history museum. According to the materials, it was the first local-history museum in the Hidaka district, established in 1966 (Showa 41). Admission is free. Follow 国道336号線 and turn right at the traffic light at 様似町本町3 (there is a sign). It's a single-story building with cream-colored walls ☺️. Historical materials related to 様似 are carefully preserved. Old documents left by a temple's chief priest are designated national Important Cultural Properties as valuable historical records of the development of Ezo 👀‼️👀‼️. Also interesting are the displayed furnishings used at 幌満駅逓所 (ほろまんえきていしょ), a travel-service station that still served a role in early Showa and operated until 1932 (Showa 7) 👀‼️👏. At their peak, there were six hundred and several dozen of these stations, and it says they were all abolished in 1947 (Showa 22). According to the materials, surviving buildings in Hokkaido today include 旧島松駅逓所 in 北広島, 旧幌向 in 南幌町, 旧ソーケシュオマベツ in 喜茂別町, 旧本願寺 in 沼田町, 旧忠別太 in 旭川市, 奥行臼 in 別海町, 塘路 in 標茶町, and 旧上藻別 in 紋別市 👀‼️.
