Very cool cute museum with interesting stuff. I had to use google translate but I could get the gist. It was a gorgeous day so we were able to also partake in the cute mini golf course in the back.

A museum where you can get to know Rishiri Island more deeply. It makes use of the historic former Oniwaki Village Office building, so even the exterior alone has charm. Inside, Rishiri Island's nature, the history of its settlement, the herring fishing culture, the lives of the people who have lived on the island, and more are displayed in an easy-to-understand way, so visiting before or after sightseeing will deepen your understanding of the island. The powerful stuffed Steller sea lion and the exhibits on fishing in the old days left a strong impression. The exhibits are compact but rich in content, so you won't get bored even taking your time. The staff were kind too, and I could look around in a calm atmosphere. A valuable place where you can experience not only Mt. Rishiri and the beautiful scenery, but also the island's history and culture.

There are lots of materials and exhibits and they're easy to understand, but the answers to the quizzes scattered around have to be viewed via QR code, and those answers are really hard to understand (wry smile) On top of that, the staff don't know anything. Maybe they haven't even looked at the materials inside? Such a waste of a facility.

I learned for the first time that in the Meiji era there was a direct sea route from Otaru to Rishiri Island. I could really feel how, over time, it changed to railways and then cars. The herring was amazing.
