Great place to study anthropology in Shiretoko peninsula.
View on GoogleDon't bother visiting if you don't speak Japanese. Small museum featuring local finds, mainly vases, rocks, arrow points, couple of nice displays on Ainu culture etc. Handful of stuffed animals and more information in Japanese. Clean, easy to access when driving between Rausu and Shibetsu.
View on GoogleI was a very interesting place which included a short film about the nature in the area and the nearby geyser was fantastic.
View on GoogleIt seems the former Uebetsu Elementary and Junior High School has been turned into a museum There were various materials on luminous moss, archaeology, Shiretoko Ibuki barrels, the four northern islands, insects, plants, animals, industry, everyday life, and more. Places where you can see and learn about all this for free are pretty rare!! Just write where you came from and the number of people at the entrance, and you can look around for free!
View on GoogleThe building looks like a community center, but it's packed with exhibits Hokkaido's local history museums are really high quality
