A quiet little wooden station along the Soya Main Line.🚂 There was a cool little museum inside the station where you could view the history of Otoineppu Station as well as a diorama right in the centre. The station had a みどりの窓口ticket office and a soba shop which was not opened when I visited the station.
View on GoogleEven in the winter it looks cool! The town seems to be pretty empty but we stopped there to wait for another train to pass. We had enough time to go to the Michi no eki and the seicomart in the area which was good because we wanted something to eat. The restaurant we wanted to go to wasn't open though.
View on GoogleOtoineppu Station, located in the heart of Otoineppu Village, is a quiet yet historically significant railway stop. Once a bustling hub, it was home to the renowned Tokiwaken Soba, a favorite among travelers for its handmade Otoineppu soba noodles, until the restaurant closed in 2021 following the owner’s passing. Today, the station serves fewer than 20 passengers daily but remains a charming gateway to the village’s rural beauty. Inside, the Tenpoku Line Reference Room offers a nostalgic glimpse into the station’s past, featuring memorabilia from the now-defunct railway line and a retro Showa-era crane game. While its vibrant days are behind it, Otoineppu Station continues to preserve the village’s history, making it a serene and meaningful stop for visitors exploring Hokkaido.
View on GoogleA station where the train stops when traveling from 名寄 to 稚内. That said, other stations have more densely populated surroundings, and there is no need to wait for another train to pass on the single track, so it is a rather puzzling waiting stop. The local train departing at 14:19 stops at this station for almost 1 hour. There is no announcement about the wait either, so it is a bit surprising if you do not know about it. Apparently there is a famous soba shop at the station, but its operating days and hours seem limited, so I could not use it this time. There are no facilities worth seeing in front of the station, which is quite inconvenient. There is a local store about 10 minutes away from the station, where you can apparently buy prepared side dishes, sweets, and so on. Many passengers used the waiting time to visit the store. The station building has plenty of charging facilities, so recharging was no problem. I asked the driver why we were waiting, but he said he did not know the exact reason. It may be a remnant of the past, or a wait for trains to pass based on an old timetable. In any case, there is nothing to do, so you need to find a way to spend the time well.
View on GoogleAs a transport hub in northern Hokkaido, this station still has a distinctive presence. Even in the bitter cold, thoughtful touches that warmly welcome travelers can be felt throughout. 【An exhibition space for exploring history】 • 天北線資料室: Inside are exhibits tracing the history of the 天北線, which once branched off here, and the 宗谷本線, allowing you to learn more deeply about railway history. It is a valuable space where you can explore the region’s roots without getting bored while waiting. 【The current situation of the local specialty 「音威子府そば」】 • Check opening days: Famous soba shops, such as 「一路」, which carries on the flavor of 常盤軒, currently open 3 days a week: Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Checking the day before visiting is essential, but you are lucky if you can stop by when they are open. 【Facilities that offer peace of mind even in winter】 • Thorough heating: The station building is well heated, and being able to wait without freezing in the extreme cold of northern Hokkaido is a very welcome consideration. The restrooms are also kept clean. This atmospheric station building is more than just a place to pass through; getting off here could itself be the purpose of a trip. I thought I would like to visit someday on the 宗谷 limited express.
