※Open every year from April 26~October 31. This ecomuseum occupies the renovated former Osashima (おさしま) Elementary School building. After the school closed, sculptor “砂澤ビッキ” used the building as his atelier for approximately 10 years until his death, so the exhibitions focus on his works. Surrounded by the primeval natural forest of Hokkaido University's Nakagawa Research Forest, the Osashima area is rich in nature, plants, and wildlife. With a nearby monument marking the place where Hokkaido was named, everything connected to the area serves as an exhibition resource for the museum. ※Closed Mondays (the following day if Monday is a public holiday) and during winter (11/1~4/25). I crossed Osashima Bridge to photograph the mood of the Teshio River in the rain. While looking for somewhere to turn around, I was drawn to light spilling from a warehouse-like building. It turned out to be a museum in the former Osashima Elementary School displaying works by sculptor 砂澤ビッキ. I felt as though I had suddenly been welcomed by a wood spirit. His atelier has been recreated here. The final exhibit is the Sapporo bar “いないいないばぁー,” whose interior he decorated. You can take cool photos with a drink in hand.

This place caught my attention whenever I passed, but I always went straight by. For some reason, that day I felt I absolutely wanted to go here, so I visited. I'm glad I went. Not only the wood carvings resembling intricate mechanical devices, but also the wonderfully free, dancing line drawings said to have been made during the sculpting process, the huge sculpture lying as if asleep in the closed school, the view through the windows… everything captivated me. Sensing the creative process let me feel Bikki's humanity and something like prayer. The workshop in the annex? is wonderful too. I'd like to visit again in a different season.
