The backbone to the towns development. Well worth visiting and very well laid out. Both inside and outside exhibition. A small shop but couldn't see any cafe, yet tables around to sit and eat. The staff all very friendly and helpful.
View on GoogleThe Steam Locomotive Museum in Otaru is a paradise for train enthusiasts. The museum features a large collection of full-size steam locomotives and vintage train cars, many of which you can explore up close. It offers interactive exhibits and informative displays about the history of railways in Hokkaido, making it both educational and fun for visitors of all ages. The museum is very accessible and perfect for families or anyone fascinated by trains. Plan to spend at least 1–2 hours to fully enjoy the locomotives and learn about their fascinating history. After visiting, you can also explore nearby attractions in Otaru for a complete day trip.
View on GoogleI found this place by accident, and I'm so glad I did! The number of trains you can see for such a small entry fee is amazing. They even offer a short ride and a demonstration of the railroad turntable a few times a day at no additional charge. Be sure not to miss it!
View on GoogleThis museum was the main reason why we travelled all the way from Sapporo. It's not a big museum compared to the one in Kyoto, but it has many historical facts, interactive exhibits and the lovely Shizuka mogul 2-6-0 model on display to satisfy all locomotive lovers. On days other than Wednesdays, you can even take a ride on a mogul 2-6-0 iron horse steam train. Unfortunately we went on a Wednesday and didn't get a chance to ride it. Also, if you pay ¥800 for the adult ticket, you can visit all 3 museums in Otaru. Primary school children can enter for free.
View on GoogleVery nice museum that is not crowded. The kids enjoyed exploring the trains and taking the short train ride in actual steam engine train
