Sakaimachi Street
A tourist shopping street in Otaru, Hokkaido, whose charm lies in its historic ctownship. We were hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, but thinking that a crisis is an opportunity, we are carrying on cheerfully, energetically, and positively. We appreciate your support.

A lively street filled with shops, cafes and local food stalls. There was plenty to browse, from souvenirs and glassware to snacks and desserts. I enjoyed wandering around without any particular plan and just seeing what caught my eye. One of my stops was the Miffy shop, where I picked up a rug and a tote bag. I was pleasantly surprised by how affordable they were, especially considering the quality and the fact that they made great souvenirs to bring home. The area can get quite busy, but that’s part of the atmosphere. It’s a nice place to spend a few hours exploring, trying different foods, shopping, and taking in a bit of Otaru’s character.
View on GoogleWas here in Otaru for honeymoon back in 2004, but only got to visit the canal not the Samaimachi Street, it was definitely a pity. ALMOST all the Japanese famous desserts originated from this street, LeTAO's world most creamy Cheesecake, Rokkatei's Marusei Butter Sandwich, KINOTOYA's freshly baked Cheese Tarts plus the most milky 🍦 ice cream........ You can't miss anyone of it. Nevertheless, all the well preserved hundreds years old buildings, this is to me, a better area to be explored when in Otaru.
View on GoogleI visited this beautiful street with my wife and my parents in April 2013, and it remains a truly unforgettable memory. We loved strolling past the beautifully preserved historic buildings filled with stunning glassware and sweet treats. Exploring the charming shops together and taking in the classic atmosphere was a magical experience for our family.
View on GoogleExtremely well laid historic street in Otaru. Lovely music box, candle clock and other shops with character all down and along the street. At the end is the steam clock. Loads of very well spaced info boards explaining the various buildings and their history. In all, well worth walking down and taking in the culture tire and history of Otaru.
