🍜🍜🍜🍜 After visiting Sumiyoshi-Jinja Shrine, we happened to drive past Ramen Shodai along the coast and decided to stop in for lunch. Sometimes the best food finds are the ones you discover by chance! Unfortunately, I was so focused on ordering and enjoying the ramen that I completely forgot to take any photos of the interior. The restaurant has a comfortable setup with plenty of counter seating as well as tables for families and groups. We arrived around 1:30 PM, and it wasn’t overly crowded, which made for a relaxed dining experience. We just missed out on their daily special—the white soy-based ramen, which is limited to only 20 bowls per day. It must be popular because it was already sold out by the time we arrived. Instead, we ordered the soy-based ramen and the salt-based ramen. Both were enjoyable, with flavorful broths and satisfying portions. While neither bowl completely blew us away, they were solid, well-prepared ramen that hit the spot after a morning of sightseeing. If you’re driving, parking can take a bit of searching. The shop only has two small parking spots directly in front. We ended up parking at a nearby grocery store, grabbing a few items there, and then walking over to the restaurant—which worked out perfectly. The staff were friendly, the atmosphere was welcoming, and the location near the coast gives the restaurant a nice local feel. If you’re exploring the area around Sumiyoshi-Jinja Shrine and looking for a good bowl of ramen without a long wait, Ramen Shodai is definitely worth a stop. And if you visit earlier than we did, you might be lucky enough to try their limited white soy ramen.
View on GoogleRamen Shodai famous for their limited-edition ramen—only 20 bowls are served each day—so naturally I thought that would be the highlight. To my surprise, the ramen from their regular à la carte menu was somehow even better! The broth was rich and full of depth without being overwhelming, the noodles had a wonderful texture, and every ingredient tasted carefully prepared. It's the kind of ramen that keeps getting better with every bite. Sometimes the biggest surprise isn't the limited special—it's discovering that their everyday menu is already operating at such a high level. No wonder this place has earned such a great reputation in Hokkaido. I would happily come back again on my next visit to Otaru!
View on GoogleThe ramen is full of flavour. I ordered the shoyu one. It’s well balanced and won’t get you thirsty. The rice ball is also amazing in a sense that they don’t have meat inside but with the charsiu taste
View on GoogleVisited on May 28th 2026 at 11:15 am. Ordered the White shoyu Ramen 1250 yen - limited to 20 bowls per day. A very mellow seafood and shoyu broth. Not too heavy. Chasu looks overcooked but is actually very tender. Overall, a good and satisfying light meal.
