This place was originally connected to land, and it seems it became a rock after Otaru soft stone was quarried out. If you have a word with the local fishermen, they'll give you permission to go out to the rock. However, the rocks along the shore are rugged, so getting there is tough. When the waves are calm it's shallow, so it's easy to go via the sea too, but seaweed grows there and it's very slippery. Offshore from Momoiwa it suddenly gets deep, so you need to be careful.
View on GoogleI didn't talk to the old man and turned back before the rope, but the whiteness of the rock and the sight of seagulls flying around were lovely.

View on GoogleA sculpture made by the rough waves of the Sea of Japan over many years.
View on GoogleIt now looks like a standalone rock, but originally it was almost connected to the land and was a quarry for Otaru soft stone. As the quarrying progressed, it became the standalone shape it is now.
