The 常夜灯 in Otaru is not just a small lighthouse monument, but also a symbol of the city’s history and connection to the sea. Originally built in 1871 to guide ships entering the harbor, it became a trusted landmark for many traders and travelers who placed their hopes for the future in this port town. Although the original structure was lost in 1874 and never rebuilt, the monument today stands as a reminder of Otaru’s role as one of Hokkaido’s earliest gateways for international trade. The setting by the canal adds to the nostalgic atmosphere, making it a meaningful stop for anyone interested in the history and spirit of Otaru’s development.

View on GoogleAllnight Lamp is a street lamp located in a junction next to the Otaru Steam Clock. I was there in late October and was delighted to see that it was decorated with a Halloween theme. The lamp is a charming addition to the area and adds to the overall ambiance of the place.
