On an Obon visit to the Otaru Aquarium, we ate lunch elsewhere, but it was so hot that we wanted something cold, so we went in. The kids had shaved ice and the parents had iced coffee. True to Hokkaido, there's no air conditioning! It was good that there was a breeze, but inside was still muggy and hot.

A canteen inside the Marine Mammal Park where you can enjoy Hokkaido seafood and local specialties while looking out at the superb view of the Sea of Japan. It's a spacious, open canteen, with the scent of the sea drifting through the interior, giving it a nostalgic atmosphere like a beach house. Popular menu items include grilled herring skewers; the fragrant aroma of herring grilled to a golden brown at the front of the shop whets the appetite. There is also a wide variety of fresh seafood such as grilled scallops, grilled whelk, and large grilled squid. Because it is grilled after you order, it takes a little time, but you can enjoy the aroma in the meantime.

Washio★Jiro's "Hokkaido Classic Gourmet" series vol.161 👑Ika-yaki (soy sauce glaze) A canteen inside the Marine Mammal Park of the "Otaru Aquarium". It is a branch of "New Sanko" in the main building, and is open only on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays. The large windows give a magnificent view of the Sea of Japan, and the location is outstanding. The menu is varied, from meal items like ramen, curry, and crab rice to light snacks like ika-yaki, tsubu-yaki, scallops, and imo-mochi. This time I had the "ika-yaki" 😋 The squid grilled over charcoal until golden had a fragrant soy sauce glaze and was quite tasty. It was delicious. Thanks for the meal♪ (Visited October 5, 2024)
