Numata Town Designated Cultural Property” “Quasi Railway Monument” “Constituent Cultural Property of Japan Heritage ‘Tantetsuko’” A star locomotive manufactured in Meiji 22(1889) at the Krauss locomotive works in Munich, Germany, and imported and operated by Kyushu Railway Company. It was subsequently taken over by Japanese National Railways in Meiji 40(1907). However, as railways developed, locomotives grew larger, so after being used for construction of the Tokyo-Yokohama Electric Railway (one of the predecessors of Tokyu Corporation) in Taisho 14(1925), it was acquired by Hokkaido Rumoi Railway Company in Numata Town in Showa 6(1931) and used to transport coal and for other purposes. It then continued in active service until month 12 of Showa 42(1967), hauling coal wagons on the freight-only line of Meiji Mining Company's Showa Mining Office (Numata Town). Following the coal mine's closure, it was transferred to Numata Town and preserved as a town-designated cultural property. It is currently the oldest surviving small steam locomotive in Japan. (On display from early month 5 through the end of month 10)
