Very well maintained museum. Polite and helpful staff. Worth a visit, despite few arrival options: from Nemuro Station, take an hourly bus and then walk to the museum. Or take a taxi, if you don’t want to wait for the hourly bus. On the way back to Nemuro station, you can either walk back to the bus stop and wait for the hourly bus, or walk all the way up to the train station, enjoy the city landscape.
View on GoogleA really interesting museum that’s free and contains lots of information about this area and the importance of the coast, from fishing to trains to communications. It also explains some of the history of the disputed islands off Hokkaido and includes some videos. A few captions are in English but Google Lens will help to fill in the gaps. You need to take your shoes off but a fancy dispenser serves up slippers at the entrance.
View on GoogleThough it's a small.museum, the displays and information are well presented and provided a lot of interesting information on the history of Nemuro and its wildlife.

View on GoogleAfter watching ゴールデンカムイ, I learned about 樺太日露国境第2天測境界標. I thought I'd stop by if I went sightseeing in 根室, so I came specifically to see it. The actual object was smaller than I expected, but reading the words carved into the stone moved me a little. Please be sure to look at the other exhibits too. You can view them for free.
