These are the ruins of a telegraph office. You can’t go inside, but it’s kind of fun to see.
View on GoogleThe remains of a radio station established in 1908. According to the 根室市 website, it played a role in Japan's first communication with an aircraft, the German airship ツェッペリン伯号, and in communicating with American Colonel リンドバーグ's trans-Pacific flight.
View on GoogleThis building is along the walk to the lighthouse at 落石岬. The decorative “R” mark on the front of the building, together with the surrounding atmosphere, made it feel like some kind of secret base. Apparently it is actually used as an art studio, but I would really love to be allowed to see inside. It seems it was previously used as a radio communications station. There are also herds of wild deer nearby. It felt like a place at the edge of the world.
View on GoogleThese are the historically significant remains of a telegraph office that communicated with the airship ツェッペリン号 and with リンドバーグ. Apparently it is now the studio of copperplate printmaker 池田良二. You can only view it from outside; you cannot enter. The surrounding area is a deer paradise. Watch out for deer droppings.
View on GoogleOpened in 1908, this legendary communications facility was a hub for contact with ships and aircraft on North Pacific routes, and also communicated by radio with the ツェッペリン airship and リンドバーグ. Having fulfilled its role, it closed in 1966. Later, from 1985 onward, it became an important motif and studio for copperplate printmaker 池田良二, a native of 根室市. In recent years, apparently, it has been active every summer as the setting for the art project “落石計画,” involving 池田 himself, his former students, and others connected with him. Wish they'd use it in the dead of winter too〜 there's nothing but Ezo deer〜 During the war, this area was an army garrison, and war remains are scattered all around. Behind this facility too, there's a hint of underground facilities..
