We visited the Bridge to the Four Islands Monument during our road trip to Eastern Hokkaido, marking a significant moment in our travels—we’ve now visited all sides of Hokkaido: the northernmost, southernmost, and easternmost points. Located at Cape Nosappu in Nemuro, this powerful and symbolic monument stands at Japan’s easternmost accessible point. The design features four connected blocks representing the disputed Northern Territories, forming a symbolic "bridge" that expresses hope for their return. Beneath the monument burns the eternal "Fire of Prayer," lit from Hateruma Island in Okinawa, which will continue to burn until the islands are returned. The surrounding area, including the "Hope Path" paved with stones from across Japan, adds to the atmosphere of peace and remembrance. The views are stunning—on clear days, you can even see the Russian-controlled islands across the sea. Visiting this monument was not only a scenic experience but also an emotional one, filled with historical and cultural significance. It's a meaningful stop that perfectly capped our journey around the four corners of Hokkaido.

Bridge to the Four Islands" and "Flame of Prayer" both signify the strong wish of the Japanese people for the return of the Northern Territories. The flame under the metal bridge is to continously burn until that wish is fulfilled.

First time to this part of Japan and overjoyed to see no other tourist at all. Lots of seagulls, should have brought along my long lens

As a monument, this is really cool, a brutalist structure with an undying flame that's constantly fueled by gas. Even in the worst of weathers.
